Underwater/underground, 2013

Artist Statement:
Rough Fescue is the important prairie grass that we learned from the ranchers and scientists could provide, with careful husbandry, a viable solution to grazing animals for summer and winter forage. In my piece, Underwater/underground I have juxtaposed Rough Fescue specimens with lithograph- printed drawings of similarly structured sea-plants that live in the world’s ocean. They are also under the threat of extinction.

Mixed media installation: 8 lithographs, wood, Velcro, nylon line and 3 Rough Fescue plant specimens. The large plant is healthy; the smaller plants show increasing grazing intensity (heavy, very heavy) at unsustainable levels that eventually starve the roots.
The artist would like to acknowledge Barry Adams, Head of the Rangeland Resource Management Program, Agriculture Centre, Lethbridge for the loan of these 3 specimens.
